Gianbecchina's exhilarating Roman experience, his contact with the "Corrente group and his stay in Milan, as well as, the approach of war, put a strain on the young Sicilian artist's expressive sensibility.
The figures are clothed with a palpable anxiety (Le Amiche 1938) almost in resigned expectation of ungovernable events.
Associated with them are works of more mature reflection: Caccia al Cinghiale (1937), Donna e chitarra, Al tavolino, La fidanzata. In works of 1938 Corrente was not a theory, a manifesto, an aesthetic code, but a passionate motion of intelligence and moral dissatisfaction.
